Documentary Arts is dedicated to the preservation
and presentation of historically and culturally significant
places and people. Through the use of audio, film, video and
photography, DocArts collects and preserves today... for the
sake of tomorrow.
Documentary Arts was founded in 1985 by
Alan Govenar to serve
as a non-profit organization to broaden public knowledge and
appreciation of the arts of different cultures in all media.
Programs developed by Documentary Arts
include the research and production of Film/Video,
and Radio features on an array of
historical and contemporary issues, as well as Books,
a series of Audio recordings
of important but rarely documented musical styles, Education
Guides, and
DVD-Rom we produced
to document the more than 250 recipients of the National
Heritage Fellowship, awarded annually since 1982 by
the
National Endowment for the
Arts.
Documentary Arts sponsors a Folk Artists
in Schools program, and has developed touring exhibitions
and organizes public programs in association with cultural
institutions in the United States and abroad. We also are
producing a musical theatre production based on the life and
work of renowned blues musician Blind
Lemon Jefferson.
Documentary Arts also administers the Texas
African American Photography Archive, a research collection
of over 50,000 prints and negatives made primarily by black
Texan Photographers in African American Texan communities.
Documentary Arts has full service facilities
for non-linear digital audio and video productions, as well
as field equipment for recording digital audio, video and
16mm motion picture film.
